PETITION TO THE Municipality of Clarington

We, the undersigned, draw the attention of the representatives and bylaw employees of the municipality of Clarington to the following:

THAT the Liberty Summer Seminar is a non-profit, non-partisan celebration of Canadian freedom.

THAT it is run by a registered charity, and has never been a "for-profit" or "commercial" venture.

THAT the Liberty Summer Seminar was hosted in Orono for nine prior years, without incident, complaint, or problems.

THAT the celebration and promotion of Canadian freedoms, values, and institutions, is protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, specifically under freedom of association and freedom of expression.

THEREFORE, we call upon the municipality of Clarington

TO drop all charges against Marta and Lech Jaworski, and;

TO allow the continuation of the annual Liberty Summer Seminar on Marta and Lech's property for many more years to come.

I am hugely disappointed by the officials of Clarendon! As a resident of China, I see the local Public Safety Bureau boys stopping such anarchy-promoting elements (e.g. music promoters and non-profits) all the time. However, the officials here find ways to shut down these events more effectively, while also maximizing revenues for the local municipality.

Take note: next time, rather than trying to get a mere CAD50k through misapplication of zoning laws, it would be much better to send the jackboots in mid-seminar, crack some heads and detain the dissidents. This a.) gives you a wider asset base to appropriate in the short term, likely at least equal to your 50k; while b.) providing you with a solid revenue stream from the 'release facilitation payments' derived through your mass detentions (because, honestly, who's to say that gnarly, destabilizing libertarian didn't attack officers and doesn't deserve the long sentence he's facing?)

This way you can shut down the politically inexpedient gathering, deter similar elements from repeat behaviour, while also promoting fiscal stability at home.

While I disagree with much of ideology behind LSS and do not think their pretensions to be a promoter of "Canadian freedoms, values and institutions" is accurate as their extreme pro-market ideology is actually in opposition to many of the community values and institutions we cherish, I do agree that they are a non-profit and have a right to meet and discuss without harassment regardless of their politics and that the county's position that the Jaworskis are running some sort of for-profit "conference centre" is not supported by the facts. The by-law summons should be withdrawn. These laws are absurd, and enforcing them on a non-profit weekend BBQ that's mostly just a group of friends hanging out and pitching in cash for food is even more absurd. When your laws have this sort of result, they're bad laws - change them already, so that both the Jaworskis and other people like them in your town won't be put through the wringer for this sort of nonsense again.
