Pat Tanzola, who puts together some incredible puns over at PunGents.com with his co-punner Rhain, had some fun with our Clarington saga yesterday. Here are some of the puns he tweeted yesterday:
The best one might be this non-pun:
“Clarington officials say they only act on complaints. Given the outcry then, shouldn’t they all resign?”
There’s a little irony on the durhamregion.com website where the Clarington This Week hosts their latest story about my family (“No compromises for Orono couple charged after liberty seminar“).
Take a look (click to enlarge):
We keep hearing different things from the municipality.
During our disappointing meeting that did not change anything for my parents, the by-law representatives told us that, if we were to get re-zoned for weddings, then that would also clear up any concerns about the Liberty Summer Seminar.
All we need to do is pay $18,000 for the application fees, plus pay for any experts the municipality felt were necessary (like an archeologist, maybe, or an expert on the impact certain sounds make on nearby cows, and so on), and, also, the municipality recommends that we hire a consultant to put our application together (the process, and the by-laws, are exceedingly difficult to understand, and are complicated to navigate without an advanced degree in the relevant field).
All of that is roughly in the neighbourhood of $30,000. For the application process. With no guarantees.

Jennifer O’Meara contacted me and my family recently. She was working on a follow-up piece to the story published in the Clarington This Week on August 19. The follow-up story ran today with the title “No compromises for Orono couple charged after liberty seminar.”
The mayor is quoted as saying “They can have a discussion with the bylaw officer, sort of like beg for forgiveness, say ‘I didn’t realize’. Or they can work it out with lawyers.”
Which by-law officer does the mayor have in mind? Does he mean the by-law officer that has my mother frightened? The one that Ezra Levant wrote about?…
Here’s an excerpt:
In 2009, I wrote a brief history of the Liberty Summer Seminar before the ninth year of the Seminar. We sent that email out to our distribution list. I thought I’d share it, so that people who have been following the “Clarington saga” can get a better sense of the Liberty Summer Seminar, its origins, and its history.
Here’s that email that I wrote back in June of 2009:
We’ve received a lot of letters recently. Often, people carbon-copy us into emails that they send to our mayor and our councillors. Here are two letters from soldiers (they gave us permission to post the letters, without identifying information), one serving in Afghanistan, the other a high school friend of Peter’s who works for the Canadian Forces and teaches cadets in Bowmanville (part of our municipality).
You might be wondering what you are permitted to do with your own property in the Municipality of Clarington. If you are, the municipality provides a very handy guide here. That guide often points to these by-laws. Those by-laws are put together in response to this official plan, which is guided by three principles: “This Plan has been prepared in recognition of three key principles which provide direction for the policies of this Plan: sustainable development, healthy communities and growth management.” (Ch. 3, p. 1)
On Wednesday, John Oakley interviewed me in the morning for his show. Mayor Abernethy, with whom I have had pleasant, if disappointing, exchanges, called in and joined the conversation. You can listen to that interview here.
In the afternoon, I was on the Charles Adler show, with Roy Green subbing in from him. I posted the link to the audio yesterday, but here it is again.
After the disappointing meeting yesterday, Roy Green asked me to be on the Charles Adler show again. I was on the program for about four minutes. You can listen to that exchange here.

Yesterday, I was on the John Oakley show in the morning, and then on the Charles Adler show (with Roy Green subbing in) in the afternoon. I can’t find the audio for the John Oakley show yet (Mayor Abernethy called in to that one), but if you want to listen to me explain my parents’ situation to Roy Green, here’s the audio link.

We’re very disappointed.
The meeting did not resolve anything.
Present at the meeting were my mom and dad (Marta and Lech), Mayor Jim Abernethy, Deputy Clerk C. Anne Greentree, Manager of Development Review Carlo Pellarin, and Junior Planner Meaghan Harrington. I was on the phone to participate in the meeting.
The municipality did not budge.
